This is the first release of 2018 from J.Walker of (TLD) who released the #UNITYmovement EP at the end of 2017. The EP accumulated 2000 downloads in the first 4 months of its release.
The artist experienced thoughts of wanting to run away in his youth and came to realise later on in life that God is the only real answer to the trouble we face in our day-to-day lives.
…Forget a network, I’m Jesus’ friend’ allude to this…
J.Walker puts it like this;
The young male experience in the UK is often difficult to navigate, as seen by current issues such as knife crime and gang violence on the streets. Children often grow up poor and when presented with gang culture where they can command respect and drug sales where they can make money, these paths are often an escape to run to. Parents or often a single parent, tend to have their own issues to battle in these circumstances and can find it difficult to offer love, care and attention in these times of stress and overdue bills.
The electricity meter being empty and the tension in the house shifting, as no one knew when the light would be put back on as mother and child fumbled around in search of a candle.
Does Runaway…Run Away?
When we received this release we knew it would be a single that will always divide opinions on delivery and style. It’s good we have diversity, its allows for creativity to shine, and I think J.Walker’s shines. Regardless he surely brings us together on a common fact… We all feel to run away from our struggles! J.Walker highlights points in his own life and also relatable content that drives you to connect with his art. A difference and a seriousness to both production and lyrics that makes me think he has a burning fire to improve and deliver some real heat to the scene.
Keeping the message pungent and forthcoming, ‘Runaway’ is a single that opens the door for more curiosity to what the London rapper has in the locker. I think there could be improvements on the flow as it does seem to strain towards the end of the track. There could be more texture and depth added to the beat in certain parts, regardless, this song that will stick in your head and encourage you none the less.
