WE JUST WANT TO LIVE, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK? – A CHRISTIAN’S TAKE ON #ENDSARS
WE JUST WANT TO LIVE, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK? – A CHRISTIAN’S TAKE ON THE #ENDSARS MOVEMENT IN NIGERIA.
If you have been following the happenings in Nigeria over the past few years, you would know that the SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) is not the only issue. Corruption has eaten into the core of the nation and we are in dire need of cleansing.
Can I also state that this problem is not physical so it cannot be dealt with physically? Only God can purge Nigeria. The shift must come from the spirit realm and manifest in the physical.
The #endsars protests started in 2017, however, the latest protest started early October. Thousands of Nigerians particularly youths decided to speak up against the ongoing police brutality. It has never happened this way, people came out for about two weeks fighting for their rights, sadly the right to live.
The people appointed to fight against robbery profile youths based on their looks, cars, electronics and so on. Almost every family in Nigeria has been a victim of police brutality or knows someone who has. We came out to say enough is enough of the extrajudicial killings, torture, rape, theft, extortion, unlawful detention, and humiliation.
Sadly, many families will never have closure on how their loved ones died.
Violence and Corruption
Nigerians have protested since 2017. The government has ‘dissolved’ SARS severally, but they are still in full operation. We just want to live, is that too much to ask?
The protests remained peaceful, well-meaning Nigerians and businesses even created helplines and donated food, water and so on to ensure everyone was safe. 28 million tweets were reported to carry the #endsars hashtag. Despite the protests, nothing was done by the government to ensure the citizen’s safety. According to a BBC report, the protesters were being attacked with police fire tear gas and hot water cannons.
On the 20th of October, the government imposed an indefinite curfew just around noon for 4 pm that day. Knowing Lagos traffic, it is almost impossible for everyone to be at home at such short notice.
Later that day, lights were put off at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos, Nigeria, including CCTV cameras. At around 7 pm soldiers fired directly as protesters who sat at tol gate, arms locked and singing the national anthem, 12 people were reported dead and several injured.
Alfred Ononugbo, 55, told BBC: “They were firing into the crowd. I saw the bullet hit one or two persons.” The government insists not to have ordered the killings. President Buhari in his 22nd of October speech did not utter a single word about the Lekki massacre.
What does God say;
Our hearts are broken, blood is crying out. The bible makes us understand that blood speaks Hebrews 12:24
Truly God hears the cries of the righteous James 5:16, God delivers His people from wicked and unreasonable men 2 Timothy 3:2
God can spare a nation because of ten righteous people Genesis 18:2
Only God will avenge His elect Luke 18:7-9
I believe the protests and several other happenings in Nigeria are because of intercession, people have and are praying for Nigeria.
I see a shift; the New Nigeria must be birthed Isaiah 66:7-8
This is a spiritual battle, and I am calling intercessors and every Christian to keep praying. Enough is enough, God is showing up and we will not back down. We may leave the streets but not our altars, we may be ignored but our God never sleeps or slumber and evidence of the killings may have been cleared but God is omnipresent.
I hope for a better Nigeria, I believe God with all my heart for one.
